I just  tried out the sencha touch examples  on the android 1.6 simulator and the performance is pathetic. Seems like google forgot to properly implement their javascript V8 engine onto their OS.

Appcelerator’s Titanium Mobile and Sencha touch are 2 different frameworks which address a totally different set of audiences. Comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges. But, to a person who has never eaten fruits ever and wants to just try tasting one (analogy to creating a simple app which doesnt do much of processing) and not try juggling with the fruits (analogy to creating detailed games or apps with lot of processing involved), they appear the same. So here’s a post attempting to compare them and help out those who have to make a choice when it comes to building a  simple app.

Here’s where Titanium Mobile wins :

1. Titanium is open source and free. Sencha touch follows dual licensing model like extJS, i.e. it is open source, but if you use it for commercial purpose, you need to buy their license.
2. Titanium builds native apps. So you have access to almost every feature in the phone, like say reading phone contacts, accessing accelerometer, GPS etc. Sencha will work inside the phone browser .  ALthough it can be made to work as a pseudo-app by embedding it inside a webview of an app made using Titanium/Cocoa. I suppose it can access GPS coordinates to some extent with the users authorization, but I am not sure about it. Also Titanium will support (in near future) running the app in the background and PUSH notifications which cannot be done using Sencha as it runs inside the browser.
3. When an app made using sencha loads , it has to load the framework first and then the content. So it will be a little slower in terms of loading time compared to Titanium built apps as it has to download the 300 KB sencha framework and the images for the buttons. Although the download process can be bypassed (Thanks to James Hughes for pointing it out) by including the framework in the Phonegap or Titanium resources folder, the javascript parsing time taken by the webview might become noticeable at the user’s end. On the iPhone simulator, it takes around 2-3 seconds for the sencha’s simple Nested list example to parse and display even when the Sencha framework is store along with the app.

Sencha touch runs in the any simulator, be in iPhone, android or blackberry. You do not need any kind of separate sencha touch simulator as such. Hence Sencha touch has its own set of advantages, namely :

1. Sencha gives more control in making changes to your UI after the app is published. Since all the code is getting loaded fresh from the server each time the user accesses, you can virtually modify the entire app without the user’s knowledge. But when it comes to a native app built using Titanium,  the changes have to go through apple’s review process and the user must manually update the app. In short Sencha requires a lesser turnaround time when it comes to bugs/updates.
2. Sencha works on almost all webkit based browsers which includes chrome, safari and opera. So you can be sure that it displays the same UI in iPhone,Android,Blackberry,iPad and also desktop browsers. So once IE and firefox fully supports HTML5, then you can have a single code which will work on all desktop browsers and all mobile devices uniformly. Titanium apps make use of native controls. So it gives a different UI on different devices and are currently limited to iPhone,iPad and Android devices (Blackberry devices soon)

Although both the frameworks use simple Javascript syntax , the choice of the framework will depend on the project under consideration. If the app just makes HTTP requests to some servers to fetch the results, then sencha touch should be good enough. But if there are plans of improving the app later on to make full use of the phones features like running the app in the background , accessing GPS data continuously , sending PUSH notifications, stream music & videos, write to Files & Databases etc then Titanium should be used. But a perfect mashup between them is what developers look out for.

Titanium too does not come without limitations. After playing around with titanium sdk 1.4 , I have realized that the guys over at appcelerator care more about the iPhone than android. Titanium android sdk does not support many of the functions provided in iPhone. Some of the most common ones are : Phone contacts, Animations, Horizontal Layout etc. Also the nature of android platforms limits the framework from providing some functions like WIndow transitions, webview for reading pdf,doc etc. I will keep adding more revelations about Titanium as I come across them. It all started back in 2010, when I had written a PHP script to send SMS through different Indian SMS gateways (see blog post on this). I would go around different websites trying to publicize this PHP script so that I would get more hits on my blog as well. In some of the blogs I had noticed different J2ME apps which send free SMS and were quite famous. But none of them had ported their apps to iphone and android platforms. A quick search revealed only the 160by2 official app which can do this.
Then I thought, Why not make a small iPhone app which can provide a client user interface to compose messages and then send the message using my own PHP script which I had already made by then. Since then, I started exploring the Appcelerator Titanium framework which was a vry impressive tool to create iPhone and Android apps using plain Javascript syntax. So I applied for both iOS developer access and Android market access by paying 99$ and 25$ respectively.
Once I got through the membership requirements, I started coding the UI in Titanium. And within a few weeks, the iPhone app was ready. The app would connect to my PHP script which would send the messages through the gateways and then return the result back to the app. The app was quite simple and had only 3 views. “Compose message” where you actually type the message after choosing your contacts from the phone addressbook, the “Outbox” view where you see the sent messages, and the “Settings” view where you add the gateways and account details.
After uploading the finished app to App store and getting it approved, I tried making it a paid app for 0.99$ The first few days I received around 1-5 sales a day. But people started complaining about some bugs in the app. And also there were a few problems with the PHP script. So I decided to make it free after a week of sales, so that I can get myself some time to fix the bugs. Since then it remained free and I spent minimal time of enhancing the app and the app continued to be downloaded for almost 6months with an avergae of 20-50 downloads a day.
I kept myself busy working on some freelancing projects on odesk.com and never actually thought of working on the app itself. But one of the iPhone projects which I had taken up on odesk got scrapped mid way through it. I did receive payment for the effort I had put in, but the app was not complete and the codebase was never used anywhere. Instead of scrapping the whole thing, I planned to use in the next version of the iPhone app and started working on the SMS app again.
But this time there was a big change. The app wouldnt send the SMS through my server/PHP script, but instead will connect directly to the gateway website. This way the load on my server would be minimal, and the gateway website would be happy to see all the HTTP requests coming from different IP addresses instead of my server addresses.
So since then, I spent most of my free time in working on the new version of the app and the new version was named Textoo Pro which can be downloaded here

What does it do ?

Textoo connects to major free SMS websites like way2sms, 160by2 etc and sends your SMS for free. It is a multi-account group-SMS app which can be thought of like a pidgin for SMS websites. You add your account username & password on to your app and instead of you going manually to the website and sending your messages, the app will automate it for you. The main purpose of the app is to give back the native texting experience to the end user even when they wish to use free SMS gateways.

I am a Chemical engineer by degree, Oracle employee by the day and a freelance developer by the night

My interest in the web technologies started in late 2005 when I became a part of the web enthusiasts club at my college; NITK Surathkal. By then I had already decided that I would pursue chemical engineering as I had no clear cut idea on what specialisation to choose. In my college, I started becoming known for the websites I designed and the posters I created. In my free time I had learnt a lot of different technologies on my own. My first love was for SWiSH , an alternative to Macromedia Flash 5 at that time. I liked to create fancy text effects and make small flash movies using Swish. Slowly, I moved on to 3dsmax, to enter into the world of visual effects. But the hardware config of my desktop prevented me from getting too close to CGI. Simple 3d scenes took a lot of time to be rendered, and when the rendering time went to the magnitude of days coupled with the frequency of power cuts in India , it became an impossible feat to get anything out of it.

Then I found my new interest in PHP after one of my friends told me about it. And since then, I have been actively involved in PHP development. To me, the simplicity of the language combined with the power of the open source community always gave way to endless possibilities. Along with PHP came all its friends. Javascript, HTML, Flash, Photoshop, I loved them all !

I worked on a small content management system of my own which , in the final year of my college this helped me get a job in Oracle and be a part of Content Management (ECM) team in Oracle. At Oracle, I am a part of Middleware suite globalization team where I work with people from Beijing, Tokyo and San Francisco on Oracle’s acquired (they too it quite often) and in house ERP applications. The toughest part of the job is learning to understand the accents used by different people.

Until recently, I was only involved in web based projects, but the day I can across Appecelerator’s Titanium framework, I said ‘this is definitely my cup of tea’.For the last 6 months, I have been busy  developing native applications for iPhone & Android using the Titanium framework and I absolutely love it.[Update: I have started hating it now. Its very difficult to manage titanium projects when they become big]

I am passionate about my work and I always love to learn new things. I hate limiting myself to a single domain and always push myself hard to explore new interests which can keep me occupied all the time. People may call it ‘lack of focus’ , hyper-wandering-mind or a Jackass of all trades ! But its just the way I am designed. There hasnt been a day where I dont get a tingly feeling about learning or doing something new. But most of my work have been in varied domain, and are unorganized.

I am now working on the creation of a mobile phone application for Android and Iphone which will allow you to send free SMS using the PHP API which I created a month back . This is the domain I never explored before, so will take a bit longer to come up with something useful. Now here’s the deal. 160by2,way2sms and freesms8 offer free SMS and earn money through the ads on their website. By using this PHP script, we are bypassing their website illegally as their ad never gets shown. I hope you will keep this in mind when you use this script. If you want to send free SMS legally, then head over to http://freesmsapi.com and create an account. They are offering an excellent service totally free of cost.
Also the developers at way2sms and freesms8 keep changing their url’s and security methods to prevent such scripts from working (160by2.com guys are cool about this). And as this PHP code published here can be viewed publicly, their jobs become easy. So I will not be able to continue development of the scripts because as soon as I publish the code here, way2sms/freesms8 change their code to break my code.
So there should be a way to restrict access to the PHP code published here so that the code reaches appropriate hands only. Maybe a password protected SVN or forums based on reputation points, I dont know..

Update as of 5th Oct ’10 : Bulk SMS services restored !!

Update as of 24th Sep ’10 : Govt has banned bulk sms temporarily. So all the bulk sms providers have stopped their services. More info. This script will not work till Sep 29th. In the meantime, I will upload the next version of the script which can check internet connectivity, login errors and other responses sent by the gateway. I will also be adding support for freesmsapi.com and freesms8.com gateways.

Update as of 10th Sep ’10: The code has been updated to accomodate a small change in the way2sms website.

This is a PHP script I wrote a while back to automate the sending of SMS/text message using 160by2.com/way2sms.com account.

You can use this PHP API script to send free sms India, Kuwait, Singapore, UAE, Phillipines, Malaysia etc. Very useful if you are combining this with the registration page of your website to verify the users mobile number similar to verification of their email address.

Some possible real world applications of this script are :
1. Email to SMS.
2. Birthday alerts/Daily joke/thought for the day/news SMS
3. Gtalk/XMPP to SMS

Pre-requisites to use this script :
1.You need a hosting server with PHP5 and cURL extension enabled. The server should be able to open socket connections to other servers.
2.a valid,verified 160by2.com account or way2sms.com account (Create an account for free on one of these gateways and send a test SMS through their UI first.)

Limitations :
1. 160by2.com offers a character limit of around 145 for each message. Way2sms offers a character limit of 140 characters per message. Please see that the character limit is honored.
2. also a limit of 50 messages per day per account and 10 messages per recepient phone number holds good for 160by2.

Basically, instead of displaying “<City name>,<country>”,  this script will display “<Road name>, <areaname>,<cityname>,<country>”

The internals : As soon as the script is executed, It uses the google latitude developer api to get your current co ordinates, then it makes use of the google maps v3 geocoding api (previously called reverse geo coding) to get the info about the co-ordinates of your current location which includes the street name/road name etc.

Steps to add this cool thingy onto your own site:

1. Install google maps application on your GPS mobile phone having GPRS connection (symbian s60,iphone,android)  and then enable Latitude inside google maps app. Ensure that detect location is selected inside the latitude settings under google maps.

2. Goto google latitude web page (http://www.google.com/latitude/apps/badge) and select Enable and show best available location.

3. In the javascript embed code section of the badge config page, select zoom level automatic, and choose the map type, size of map.

4. Put the generated embed code on your blog to display the map and an approx city level address (we’ll fix this in a moment)

5. Now to display a more accurate address (which includes the roadname,streetnames, areanames) , extract the userid for latitude from the javascript embed code and put it in the below PHP code (line 2)

6.Add this PHP code into a file named “mylatitudelocation.php” and upload it into your webserver root.

7. Add this iframe code into your blog widgets sections to display the accurate address of your current location

Update as of 17 June 2011 : I have changed my phone from Nokia E71 to iPhone 4 and I found a better way to display my location. In Nokia Symbian Phones, the Google maps app itself included a feature to auto update in the background, but the battery drain was considerably high . Also , whenever I reboot my phone, I forget to enable tracking after bootup. Now in iPhone 4 in addition to the google latitude app, you could use Apple’s implementation of mobileme.com find my iphone tracking service right from iOS. I found this really cool script sometime back called playnice (PHP script run as a cronjob). This script will manually initiate a mobileme.com “find my iphone” request which will fetch my iphone’s current location instantly and use the data to update my google latitude location. This way, the battery drain is negligible because there is no background app running on my phone tracking my location, instead … my server initiates a location update request at a frequency which I specify and this request reaches my iPhone more or less consuming data as much as a PUSH notification only . This way I am always getting tracked even if I reboot my phone and there is no need of any app to be running in the background. Also there is no location history in mobileme.com, but with playnice, my server maintains a complete geo co-ordinates history in a text file, which will help me better track my phone , in case it gets lost.

My location data is automatically fetched using Google Latitude Location API. The Google maps app on my phone broadcasts my location automatically and thus you can see my current location on this page

The mapme.at widget here shows all the locations I have visited in the last 1 week and can pull the data from both Google latitude and Foursquare servers. Pretty cool widget if you switch between foursquare and google latitude/maps on your phone very frequently.

The php curl script will automate a user login to google sms channel ( define username/password in the php code ) and then will send an invite sms to the number specified through the iphone UI. I also had written a script which will send a group sms to all your sms subscribers without actually logging-in to Google sms channels. I will try to find the script and post it here soon.
