Now here’s the deal. 160by2,way2sms and freesms8 offer free SMS and earn money through the ads on their website. By using this PHP script, we are bypassing their website illegally as their ad never gets shown. I hope you will keep this in mind when you use this script. If you want to send free SMS legally, then head over to http://freesmsapi.com and create an account. They are offering an excellent service totally free of cost.
Also the developers at way2sms and freesms8 keep changing their url’s and security methods to prevent such scripts from working (160by2.com guys are cool about this). And as this PHP code published here can be viewed publicly, their jobs become easy. So I will not be able to continue development of the scripts because as soon as I publish the code here, way2sms/freesms8 change their code to break my code.
So there should be a way to restrict access to the PHP code published here so that the code reaches appropriate hands only. Maybe a password protected SVN or forums based on reputation points, I dont know..

Update as of 5th Oct ’10 : Bulk SMS services restored !!

Update as of 24th Sep ’10 : Govt has banned bulk sms temporarily. So all the bulk sms providers have stopped their services. More info. This script will not work till Sep 29th. In the meantime, I will upload the next version of the script which can check internet connectivity, login errors and other responses sent by the gateway. I will also be adding support for freesmsapi.com and freesms8.com gateways.

Update as of 10th Sep ’10: The code has been updated to accomodate a small change in the way2sms website.

This is a PHP script I wrote a while back to automate the sending of SMS/text message using 160by2.com/way2sms.com account.

You can use this PHP API script to send free sms India, Kuwait, Singapore, UAE, Phillipines, Malaysia etc. Very useful if you are combining this with the registration page of your website to verify the users mobile number similar to verification of their email address.

Some possible real world applications of this script are :
1. Email to SMS.
2. Birthday alerts/Daily joke/thought for the day/news SMS
3. Gtalk/XMPP to SMS

Pre-requisites to use this script :
1.You need a hosting server with PHP5 and cURL extension enabled. The server should be able to open socket connections to other servers.
2.a valid,verified 160by2.com account or way2sms.com account (Create an account for free on one of these gateways and send a test SMS through their UI first.)

Limitations :
1. 160by2.com offers a character limit of around 145 for each message. Way2sms offers a character limit of 140 characters per message. Please see that the character limit is honored.
2. also a limit of 50 messages per day per account and 10 messages per recepient phone number holds good for 160by2.

Install this plugin into Joomla through the community builder plugin installer and enable it.

Defining multiple forms

Click on this plugin under the plugin management tab and in the params section define the forms in this format:

form_name1:field_name1,field_name2

form_name2:field_name1,field_name2

• form_name is a identifier for the form you are creating. Keep it unique and without spaces. This form_name has to be passed as a GET parameter to the default CB registration page to show up only the fields you want.
• field_name1,field_name2 etc are the names of the fields under the Field management tab in CB.

An example entry could be like this :

agent_form:name,username,password,company_name

user_form:name,username,password,address

The 2 forms can be accessed by adding &form=agent_form and &form=user_form respectively to the default CB registration form URL.

Please note that you could also have mandatory fields in any of the forms. In such a case the mandatory fields will be filled with some text to bypass the validation checks before the form is submitted.

Passing hidden data

Sometimes it is necessary to store information based on the above defined forms. For example, when the agent_form is submitted, you may want to store a specific value say ‘agent’ in one of the CB fields (say cb_usertype) so that you can know later,what form was used by the user. This can be done using the hidden data field.

The hidden data field also uses a similar format for definining the fields.

form_name1:field_name1=value1,field_name2=value2

form_name2:field_name1=value1,field_name2=value2

So here, once the form_name1 is submitted, the field_name1 will have the value set to value1.

Note that the value should not contain any special characters like commas or quotes. The value is added directly to the database as soon as the user registration is confirmed and hence will skip any validation checks.

One of the real world applications of this feature is by combining with the JLS grouping plugin which will add the current user to the necessary user group based on one of the CB fields.

Adding form specific title/description

You can add multiple delimiter fields to your CB fields list which enables you to add any html code or static text to your form. This technique combined with the above plugin can create multiple CB forms with form specific titles. But the only limitation here is that the field names for the delimiter fields are also displayed. I dont think there is a way to avoid that.

Auto assign user group based on the registration form

I have modified Jorge Luis Savoini’s (aka BestBeast) JLS group selector plugin to make it work for Joomla 1.5 and CB2.2. This CB plugin also needs to be installed using CB plugin installer. This plugin allows you to assign different user groups based on a value from combo box which the user selects during Registration. But in real world applications, you may not want to ask the user to explicitly specify the user group, but instead you want to redirect them to the appropriate form and use the hidden data method in the above plugin to pass the required data to cb_usertype field. Basically, instead of displaying “<City name>,<country>”,  this script will display “<Road name>, <areaname>,<cityname>,<country>”

The internals : As soon as the script is executed, It uses the google latitude developer api to get your current co ordinates, then it makes use of the google maps v3 geocoding api (previously called reverse geo coding) to get the info about the co-ordinates of your current location which includes the street name/road name etc.

Steps to add this cool thingy onto your own site:

1. Install google maps application on your GPS mobile phone having GPRS connection (symbian s60,iphone,android)  and then enable Latitude inside google maps app. Ensure that detect location is selected inside the latitude settings under google maps.

2. Goto google latitude web page (http://www.google.com/latitude/apps/badge) and select Enable and show best available location.

3. In the javascript embed code section of the badge config page, select zoom level automatic, and choose the map type, size of map.

4. Put the generated embed code on your blog to display the map and an approx city level address (we’ll fix this in a moment)

5. Now to display a more accurate address (which includes the roadname,streetnames, areanames) , extract the userid for latitude from the javascript embed code and put it in the below PHP code (line 2)

6.Add this PHP code into a file named “mylatitudelocation.php” and upload it into your webserver root.

7. Add this iframe code into your blog widgets sections to display the accurate address of your current location

Luckily I came across andLinux when I was googling for vmware. I thought I will give it a try .. 200 MB wont take much time. The installation was quick, just keep “next”ing and Voila , linux is installed in 5 minutes.

Trying to be smart,I selected it to run as a Manually started windows service so that it would boot up when required only. This small step made me spend a lot of time trying to fix a major issue. The issue was that , after the andLinux service is started, I cannot run any linux application which has a GUI , which actually includes even the Terminal. The error was

“Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: 192.168.11.1:0.0″

Googling gave a lot of links leading to a a few linux forums. But I couldnt find a fix. FInally I gave up, and thought of shutting down windows and going to bed. With a dejected heart, I clicked on the Start Menu and was trying to find the shut down button. Amidst the cluttered rack of icons, I saw the “All Programs” button highlighted. I clicked on it to see andLinux folder also being highlighted in orange. I kept clicking orange coloured links to finally reach something called Xming. Clicked on it and to my surprise every linux application started working. Later I came to know that Xming was nothing but X server for Windows. It had got disabled because of making andLinux boot manually instead of automatic. I happily went to Synaptic package manager and installed Apache,mysql , php and also gPHPEdit.

Now I have a fully working copy of linux running ubuntu 9 inside windows 7. The speed is amazing. All the linux window will appear beside you windows’ window. You can make use of linux for development only, without even booting up Linux.

Now I wanted to access my files which were in windows through andLinux. So I read the documentation on their site which said that Samba is enabled by default and can access windows shared files. But I was facing problems due to windows firewall. So I disabled firewall, and shared my entire windows partition ( with the appropriate permissions .. of course ). And executed the /etc/rc.local file. It said permission denied even after trying sudo. The problem was that my windows username didnt have a password. So I had to leave it blank in the smbpasswd file which gave a input error. So i gave my username as my password, which didnt work either. So i setup my windows username with a password and specified it in the smbpasswd file and ran rc.local again. VOILA !! it mounted and I was able to read and write to my windows partition.

Now I wanted one more thing. Remote ssh from outside my home network. SO I reached office, accesed my comp through logmein.com and starting setting ssh. Doing a ps said that sshd was running. So i tried to login to ssh from my windows machine by putting the IP as 192.168.11.150. It worked. But my router wasnt able to ping 192.168.11.150. So I tried ssh to 192.168.11.1 and the connection ws refused. So I again went to the colinux site and found out that the settings.txt file in the andLinux install folder had to be edited to add the port forwarding option through windows. The following line had to edited

eth0=slirp,,tcp:22:22/tcp:80:80

Now i restarted my windows 7. Ran the andLinux service. Then I forwarded  port 22 on the router to port 22 of the windows ip (mine’s 192.168.1.90) and tried out www.canyouseeme.org for port 22 and it reported a success.

Finally I was able to access ssh from the outside world.

Now I wish I could run Beryl/compwiz on windows 7 through andLinux… that;ll be awesome.. andLinux folks- gr8 job.

(P.S: If your linux takes a long time when it tries to run local boot scripts (rc.local) , try disabling windows firewall through control panel. It worked for me )

The php curl script will automate a user login to google sms channel ( define username/password in the php code ) and then will send an invite sms to the number specified through the iphone UI. HITEC stands for Hyderabad Information Technology Engineering Consultancy City. It is “the” technology hub of Hyderabad… situated about 15 – 20 kms from the main Hyderabad city.
Let me be frank, in the first month I stayed here, I couldn’t figure out how to spell the name of this city. Some call it Hightech and others use hitech. And you will find different anagrams of it on the hoardings. But the guys at the post office have no issues whatsoever in whatever spelling you choose to put in the postal address.

Accomodation :

If you are looking for a place near Hightec city there are 2 choices you can consider.

1. Either stay in Madhapur which is closer to the Hyderabad city but has lesser number of flats available for rent

2. Look out for a rented flat in Kondapur which is farther from Hyderabad city but is a total residential area and has better choice of rented flats available.

Hitec city residential areas

I would recommend you choose Kondapur because in Madhapur the traffic is unmanageable during the peak hours as most people who work in Hitec city stay near Ameerpeet and they have to pass through Madhapur to reach home. But Madhapur has its own advantages. It has its own HighTech AC Movie Theatre. It has many of the international brands like Levis,Woodland,Reebok Adidas,Dominoes, Baskin Robbins and a long list of good restaurants closeby. Banjara hills is also closer to Madhapur and you can find some of the best restaurants in Hyderabad situated there. Whereas Kondapur is more preferable if you want to have a wide variety of residential flats at affordable prices.

Whitefields near Kondapur is the closest residential area to the higtec city offices. There is a short route which takes you directly to Hitec city without even touching the main road. The prices of flats in whitefields are high compared to Kondapur. And most of the landlords refuse to give rooms to Bachelors

Shilpa park is a newly developed area where there are a few flats. Again the prices are slightly high compared to Kondapur and you have to come to Kondapur for the basic amenities. (There is a ‘more’ store right in Shilpa park and a lot of small ‘Kirana’ stores have come up there)

Kondapur is the best place to reside in terms of cost and the facilites you get. There is a apsrtc bus stand in Kondapur and every 10 minutes, there is a bus to Koti (No.127k) or to Secunderabad (10H). There is a Reliance fresh store where you can get groceries and everyday use stuff.. They do accept Sodexo coupons/cards instead of cash for food products which will help you increase your tax savings(you tend to care a lot about tax savings during the initial days). There are a few small restaurants like Hot rottis,Occasions, drum sticks, Samrat darshini closeby. You can also find few bars like Club 8, Rooftop garden in Kondapur. There are 2 wheeler service centers for Hero Honda, Bajaj,TVS and Honda distributed throughout Kondapur. Also Toyota has a big showroom here and lately Chevrolet, MarutiSuzuki and Tata have setup their counterparts as well. Kondapur also houses a few clinics and medical stores. You will find a bunch of general stores (called KIRANA stores) where you can literally buy anything under the sun. You can find a handful of Mobile phone recharge/accessory retail outlets.

Conveyance:

If you reside near Hitec and you dont own a vehicle, then the best way to travel everyday to office is by shared-auto rickshaws. During peak hours, you can find a lot of auto-rickshaws plying to Cyber towers charging less than 7 Rs per head(in fact, 7 rs per arse, as your head is usually hanging out). The drivers are smart enough to optimize the space inside to fit in exactly 7 passengers of any size , gender and skilled enough to avoid the traffic cops who wait to tear a traffic ticket slip (which they know for sure is their payslip for black money) wearing raincoats to hide their white uniforms , jumping out of the blue to catch hold of these mini scientist auto drivers performing structural stress test of their autorickshaws right on the main roads.

Chill outs:

If you want to have some fun during weekends you could visit the Ramoji film city (some 50 kms) Hussain Sagar lake ( 15kms) , Lumbini park (beside the lake), Prasadz IMAX theatre (India’s only IMAX ?) (close to the lake), Snow World ( 20 kms), Golconda fort ( 15 kms – towards Gachibowli) etc. An Auto to reach IMAX/HussainSagar will go through Madhapur-Jubilee checkpost-Cinemax-Brandfactory-Central-Khairatabad and will charge around 100Rs.

• Ramoji film city (spend a day) – Fun rides, restaurants, city tour. Learn how movies are made, movie sets etc. If you are lucky, you mind get a chance to meet some tollywood/kollywood artists (definitely not on weekends). I had read somewhere that some scenes in the upcoming movie 200 crore budget movie Endhiran were shot here.
• Hussain Sagar lake ( you could spend 2-3 hours) – Boating , visit to Buddha Statue.
• Lumbini Park (2-3 hours) – 3D Laser show at 7pm
• Prasadz IMAX – you can catch up the 3d Underwater movie or watch a regular hollywood movie on a gigantic screen. . Also visit Eat Street (mcd,pizzahut,frankies n a lot more)on the necklace road nearby(1 km from Prasadz)
• Snow world – (5-6 hours) – Artifical snowfall , artificial rock climbing, the room with mirrors everywhere, a not-so-scary artificial dungeon etc.
• Golconda fort – (4-5 hours) – climb up the fort, watch the light and sound show about the history of Golconda kingdom.
• Charminar 2 hrs – Very crowded area. Till 5pm, you are allowed to climb up the stairs inside charminar. A good place to buy hyderabadi pearls and artificial ornaments.)
• GVK Mall – Movie theatre, 4D theatre, a beautiful aquarium at the center, Shopperstop, Reebok/adidas/puma etc
• Inorbit mall – the biggest mall in hyderabad – hypercity, shopperstop, lifestyle, apple istore(newly opened in 1st floor) homecenter, puma, adidas, nike, food court – with mcdonalds/frankies/creamstone, CCD (dont miss the good view of durgam cheruvu (secret lake) from the lawn just outside CCD). Also has a car spa in the basement.. get your car cleaned when you shop at inorbit . Inorbit is around 3-4 Kms from Kondapur, auto drivers will charge around 40 Rs from Kondapur
• Other malls like Central, City center, Big bazaar(with Big cinemas), brand factory, and also try out SVM mall – where u cud enjoy bowling
• Nehru zoological park – 20 kms from Kondapur, auto fare 150 -175 Rs. The zoo is crowded during weekends. If you own a car, you can take it inside the zoo. Main attractions : White tiger, Leopard, Puma, Lions, Giraffe, Deers, Elephants, White peacocks etc. Dont forget to carry enough food and water inside as the number of stalls inside is limited. Camera charge – Rs 20 for all types (unlike Rs 500 which is mentioned on their website)
• You can also visit the campuses near Gachibowli (4 kms) like IIIT campus, ISB campus, Microsoft campus, Wipro etc. There is a big Financial district with a lot of finance companies coming up there. There is also a huge stadium close to IIIT.
• You could also visit ICRISAT (a lil distance from Gachibowli). It is a good place to stay overnight and to catch the early sunrise. ICRISAT is a crop research institute. So you will get to see the various methods they use to grow different crops and the way they spray water/pesticides. It is UN sponsored programme  (all the vehicles have a number plate which reads “UN” instead of “AP”)

Weather

The weather right now is pretty good. It varies between 17 – 32 degree celsius between June to Dec. Nights are really cold during winter. The summer season is supposedly unbearable.  I havent personally experienced it, but people recommend that you buy atleast an air cooler if not a conditioner.

Update: Its april 4th ’10 and the heat has become unbearable. Gonna buy a air cooler today. My choices symphony air coolers, bajaj, kenstar available at Croma, Reliance digital, Big bazaar.The branded ones are in the range of Rs 5k(20 ltrs) – 8k(40ltrs). You could also buy unbranded ones for as low as Rs.1500(20 ltrs) , 2300(40 ltrs) at Madhapur.

Update 2: Its June 30th ’10 today. I had bought a symphony H! cool air cooler 2 months ago from Croma, Madhapur for 5000Rs and the cooling water pump had stopped working after a month. So I had called up the symphony service center ( Hyderabad contact : Mr Kiran, Ph 934620257) and they never turned up. But all of a sudden today (after 20 days of the complaint), he came to my house at kondapur and has fixed the cooler. He told me that there are very few authorized repairers in hyderabad who have to cater a huge list of complaints from all over hyderabad. He fixed it within 10 minutes and told me that the ground water in hyderabad has alot of calcium content which lead to hevay deposits inside the cooler tank. In my case too, this was the problem. The water pump had got blocked by these deposits. He adviced me to drain out the water whenever it was being  unused for long period of time.

Cost of living

The cost of living in Kondapur isnt as over inflated as some of the areas in bangalore. The approximate rent of a 2 BHK unfurnished flat is around 10 K Rs. Although you could get small flats for 7-8 K. If you are lucky, you can get  3 BHK furnished for 15 K and sometimes a 5 BHK unfurnished flat for 20 K. The annual increment on the rent is around 5-10%. Usually people catch hold of brokers who charge 50% of the first month rent as brokerage fees. You could also get cheap working-mens hostel, although I would not recommend anyone to go for it.

When you are considering a flat, enquire for the right split up of Maintenance charges , monthly rent, annual deposit, annual increment in the rent, agreement period ( usually 11 months), availability of separate electricity meter, generator backup etc. Demand for the immediate signing up of the rental agreement as a precaution. ( The rental agreement usually states the time period for which the rent remains constant.. usually 11 months and the exact splitup of the charges.)

In Kondapur , a standard North Indian Thali would cost anywhere between 45 Rs – 60 Rs. South Indian meal would cost you between 30-50 Rs. If you stay in Kondapur and are lazy to walk upto the restaurant, you could get a free home delivery from the restaurant called Occasions (Paite pooja ho jaye) if you order food stuff worth atleast 150 Rs (2 thalis + a lassi) by calling them on 040-65194444.

Some quick tips

1.You can get Hathway TV cable for your TV( 200rs monthly). If you want a lot of channels esp the sports channels like ESPN, Start sports, then you need to buy a decoder set top box from Koti(1200 Rs Cisco brand) which will let you watch any channel without any extra price. The signal quality is as good as the ones on Tata Sky and the decoder lets you view EPG programme guides too . 3. You can get aquafina mineral water cans home delivered (Rs 70 per 25 ltrs) from any nearby ‘Kirana store’. Local branded cans are available for 30 rs per 20 ltrs.
4. For internet connections, there are a lot of local ISPs offering good services (Beam cable – 8mbps @ 1000 Rs/month .. although have heard a lot of bad reviews about beam. Beam is supposedly the best choice if you are staying at Malaysian Township , Tikona networks have wifi coverage throughout kondapur – 2mbps @ 600… I get full wifi signal on 4th floor too.), but I have opted for Airtel Broadband fixed line with 1mbps UL for 1699Rs/month which is very reliable(Fairusage limit of 100Gb afterwhich speed reduces to 512kbps). Now airtel doesnt offer good plans for new customers, some kind of TRAI orders have forced them to change their slabs.
5. AFAIK,There are 2 ATMs in Kondapur Andhra bank ATM and SBI bank ATM. There’s one more ICICI atm on the way to Cyber towers.
6. If you goto Reliance fresh @ kondapur very frequently, apply for their membership card(200 rs for permanent card, temporary ones for 6months are free). They have free gifts/discounts for regular customers.
7. You can get small LPG cylinders for arnd 200 Rs which will last for a month on average cooking load.

P.S: If the widget doesnt display updates on your site.. and just shows “loading..”, it could be that the url path of not pointing to the right XML. If you arent sure what relative and absolute urls are, just try using the url like http://yoursite.com/your_directory/updates.xml.

I have been using the windows vista sidebar a lot lately and found a gadget for every purpose from love calculators to email alerters. Yesterday I came across the eftel usage meter and then felt that there must be a gadget for my ISP too. So I created this small gadget.

Vista Sidebar Gadget

The dataone usage finder vista sidebar gadget is a must if you use the BSNL’s Dataone broadband connection. It will automatically login to your dataone account and retreive the off-peak and total bandwidth usage and calculates the bandwidth remaining in the current month. It will also refresh itself after a certain specified time interval.

There are other tools which do the exact same thing by staying in the system tray like Dataone Quick Usage Finder, Dataone Usage Finder, Dataone tool. These tools are excellent and have better features than the Dataone gadget.

But the advantage of this gadget is that its tiny, consumes lesser resources, simple and requires no installation. It also fetches the data in less than 5 seconds much lesser than the other programs.

Instructions for use :

To install it, just double click the gadget file you download. It gets added to the sidebar automatically. No separate installation needed.

Usage :

Before using it, enter your username ,password and monthly usage limit  in the settings page by clicking on the small spanner icon which appears when you roll over the cursor on the gadget. The gadget automatically shows the stats on clicking the OK button in settings page.

The First line displays the broadband package you have subscribed ( Home 250/500 etc). The second line gives you the total traffic ( download + upload ). If you have night unlimited package, the traffic includes the night usage also. The third line shows the billable usage which excludes the night (2am to 8am) usage. The progressbar shows the percentage of traffic used during the month. The usage limit i.e. the maximum traffic permitted for your package ( e.g Home 500 – 2.5 GB ) has to be set in the settings page. The fourth line shows the bandwidth remaining per day. i.e. the remaining bandwidth divided by the remaining number of days. The progress bar when at 100% will correspond to the average bandwidth remaining per day at the beginning of the month. If you can maintain the progress bar at 100 % , you can be sure that you will never run out of the bandwidth limit at the end of the month.The refresh button(green circular button) at the bottom left corner can be used to manually refresh the stats. Remember, the stats on the BSNL server get updated only if you disconnect the network(if you use the OS dialer) or if you restart the modem (if you are using the modem’s inbuilt pppoe dialer – holds true if your connection is always ON ).

The gadget will only work in Windows Vista and on a BSNL’s DataOne Broadband connection.

P.S. This gadget wont work for new dataone connections i.e. If you check the usage using bbservice.bsnl.in, the gadget wont work.

I do not have access to bbservice.bsnl.in. If someone who does have access could mail me their username and password, I would be happy to make the gadget work for newer connections too.
